World Heritage Day Celebrated

Mokokchung| 18 April (JMCNews): Along with the rest of the world, the Department of History, Jubilee Memorial College, Mokokchung celebrated World Heritage Day under the theme, “Heritage and Climate, ” on April 18 at JMC Hall with T. Senka Ao, Padma Shree awardee and former former editor and chief of Ao Milen as the speaker.

On the occasion Padma Shree recipient T. Senka Ao, spoke on the importance of preserving heritage. “Heritage is not only about monuments and things holding materialistic value; it also includes customs and practices, language, natural formation and folklore”, he said.

He continued, “Our roots are our heritage, and climate is also a part of our heritage.” He stated, “We belong to a specific location, a specific environment, and it becomes a part of our heritage.” In the case of the Nagas, the environment and climatic conditions of a particular place distinguish one tribe from another.

In his final remarks, he stated that while material legacy is essential, the best and most significant heritage is our character, which he believes we are losing.

Earlier Dr. Imtiwati Jamir, Principal JMC, expressed his gratitude to T. Senka Ao for his contributions to society, including the publication of nine books in Ao that are now used in school curriculum.

The results of a Mobile Photography contest held by the Department of History, JMC were announced during the day as part of the event. The first position was bagged by Bendangjungshi, 6th Semester while the second and third position was bagged by Temjenmenla and Imlikokba of second semester respectively.
